Reconversion Lab is a career resilience platform for international development and humanitarian professionals navigating the biggest sector transformation in a generation.
For two decades, international development promised long careers, mission-driven work, and a clear path forward. That contract is being rewritten. Donor withdrawal, structural localisation, and organisational contraction are converging on a workforce of tens of thousands of experienced professionals — many of whom now find themselves navigating the biggest career transition of their generation.
The sector's HR systems weren't built for this. Generic career coaches don't understand log-frames, MEAL plans, or what it means to have managed a USAID contract through a security incident. International staff handbooks have offboarding chapters, but no chapters on what comes after.
Reconversion Lab fills that gap. We translate development careers into the language of the sectors that value them — management consulting, ESG, climate finance, fintech, philanthropy, government, impact investing. We map the bridges. We rewrite the CVs. We build the tools that turn "I don't know what comes next" into "here are my three best options, ranked by fit."
We're not telling anyone to leave the sector. We're telling everyone the sector is leaving them in different shape — and giving them the infrastructure to land on their feet.
We don't tell people to be more positive about the sector. The sector is contracting, the funding is uncertain, the localisation transition is real and right and disruptive. Our methodology starts with that honesty.
Your skills don't need to be replaced. They need to be translated. "Adaptive management" is "agile delivery." "Log-frame" is "KPI framework." "Donor reporting" is "investor relations." The language gap is the bridge, not the barrier.
Generic career advice fails sector professionals because it doesn't speak our language. Every pivot recommendation we make is grounded in actual hiring data, real job descriptions, and real career transitions our team and network have made.
Your first post-development role may not be your forever role. We build career resilience — the capacity to navigate transitions repeatedly — not just one transition. The skills you learn here serve you for the next twenty years, not just the next twelve months.
Reconversion Lab is built and developed by professionals with substantive experience inside international development and humanitarian organisations. Our contributors include former programme managers, technical advisers, country directors, and consultants who have made the transition themselves — or supported colleagues through it.
We do not list names publicly at this stage, as several team members continue to work inside sector organisations and contribute to RLab in an advisory capacity.
Reconversion Lab is a career resilience platform operated by Complexia, a consulting company based in Tunis. Complexia operates separately in strategic consulting, peacebuilding research, and economic recovery work — those services are not part of the Reconversion Lab platform.
